HISTORICAL CHURCH

The construction of the historical  church of San Clemente is back to  1131  for pilgrims and soldiers who were embarking on a journey to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, marking the beginning of the island's rich history.  Dedicated to Pope Clement I, a patron of seamen and a martyr according to legend, the complex was initially run by Augustine canons until the 14th century. Since then, the island has undergone various transformations, from serving as a military garrison after the suppression of religious orders by Napoleon in 1810  One of the island's most remarkable features is the San Clemente church. The church facades boast engravings of soldiers, an unusual sight for religious constructions.  A prime example of the island's rich history is the building of Holy House of Loreto, inside the San Clemente church..
